Chan drew inspiration from the Prairie School architectural style, known for its horizontal emphasis and de-emphasized ceiling height. In this project, functional blocks are incorporated as floating cabinetry along a gallery-like wall, expanding the space while serving essential functions such as food and beverage, printing, and more. This unique approach turns functionality into architectural devices and ornamentation.
The design's unique properties lie in its ability to maximize spatial efficiency and flexibility. Despite the small enclosure, the office allows for flexible programming, accommodating different occupancies ranging from 4 to 18 people. The entry foyer serves multiple purposes, functioning as a reception area, huddle space, training room, and cocktail area. Additionally, a backroom provides storage for folding chairs and a private relaxation pod.
The materiality of the office design leans towards warm, textural, and light finishes. Light oak, copper, and calacatta marble are abundantly used, creating a welcoming and visually appealing atmosphere. Sustainability was also a priority, with materials chosen based on their sustainability certifications.
Throughout the design process, thorough research was conducted to understand the business needs of the company. The office's fluctuating occupancies, due to remote work and hosting events, were taken into consideration. Precedent research was conducted to derive spatial solutions relevant to each occasion. Additionally, historical styles were studied to apply their principles where relevant.
One of the main challenges faced during the project was space planning in a small area. However, through innovative design solutions, Adrian Chan successfully executed a design that satisfied the various occupant needs of the client.
This project is an exploration of how a tiny office can accommodate a wide range of functions, occupancies, and privacy needs while remaining aesthetically curious and human-centric. Adrian Chan's use of functional blocks inspired by the Prairie School creates a visually captivating environment that maximizes spatial efficiency and flexibility.
Adrian Chan's outstanding design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of the project, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The design integrates industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
